Medication and Anxiety
Click image to go back to Anxiety Topics. Typically we prefer not to use medications in treatment. Instead we will teach you behavioral techniques that will stimulate your body to produce the chemical modulations that it needs. There are, however, several circumstances where we refer our clients for a medication evaluation. These include very severe panic, social phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. OCD, for example, has been a very difficult disorder to resolve but it is now showing great responsiveness to Luvox and Paxil. These medications plus psychotherapeutic treatment can bring great relief to the client with OCD.

The most frequently prescribed medication for anxiety disorders has been Xanax, also known as alprazolam, which is very addictive and has a therapeutic window of about two to three weeks. (That means that it is effective for two to three weeks, and then you have to start increasing the dose to get the same level of effectiveness.) The dangers of using this drug on a regular basis greatly outweigh the benefits.

The therapists at the Consultants for Change do not prescribe medication. For those clients who need medication, we do have working relationships with several physicians and psychiatrists in the local area. If you feel you need medication, we will be happy to refer you to one of these physicians.
