Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Click image to go back to Anxiety Disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is excessive anxiety and worry that occurs more days than it does not, and lasts at least six months. These are the people who are 'worrywarts', and who cannot help but worry about things that most others accept with no difficulty. The person with GAD finds it difficult to control the worry.

This worry is accompanied by at least three symptoms from the following list:

  1. Restlessness, or feeling keyed up or on edge
  2. Being easily fatigued
  3. Difficulty concentrating, or mind going blank
  4. Irritability
  5. Muscle tension
  6. Sleep disturbance

The worry and these physical symptoms cause the person significant distress, and impairment in social, occupational, or some other important area of functioning.
