Panic Attacks with Agoraphobia
Click image to go back to Anxiety Disorders. Agoraphobia is the fear of being in places or situations where escape might be difficult or embarrassing. Agoraphobia develops in many people who have panic attacks. They have a panic attack away from home and it serves as a conditioned stimulus for making that place or situation feel unsafe. As a result, they simply begin to avoid these unsafe situations. This leads to a gradual constriction of their environment. In extreme cases, a person may be confined to their bedroom and bathroom. Every other place feels unsafe and dangerous. This situation can be very crippling. If you have panic attacks and you notice that you are beginning to avoid places, "get thee to a therapist immediately!"
